    A pattern mining approach for information filtering systems

    It is a big challenge to clearly identify the boundary between positive and negative streams for information filtering systems. Several attempts have used negative feedback to solve this challenge; however, there are two issues for using negative relevance feedback to improve the effectiveness of information filtering. The first one is how to select constructive negative samples in order to reduce the space of negative documents. The second issue is how to decide noisy extracted features that should be updated based on the selected negative samples. This paper proposes a pattern mining based approach to select some offenders from the negative documents, where an offender can be used to reduce the side effects of noisy features. It also classifies extracted features (i.e., terms) into three categories: positive specific terms, general terms, and negative specific terms. In this way, multiple revising strategies can be used to update extracted features. An iterative learning algorithm is also proposed to implement this approach on the RCV1 data collection, and substantial experiments show that the proposed approach achieves encouraging performance and the performance is also consistent for adaptive filtering as well

    Relevance feature discovery for text analysis

    It is a big challenge to guarantee the quality of discovered relevance features in text documents for describing user preferences because of the large number of terms, patterns, and noise. Most existing popular text mining and classification methods have adopted term-based approaches. However, they have all suffered from the problems of polysemy and synonymy. Over the years, people have often held the hypothesis that pattern-based methods should perform better than term- based ones in describing user preferences, but many experiments do not support this hypothesis. This research presents a promising method, Relevance Feature Discovery (RFD), for solving this challenging issue. It discovers both positive and negative patterns in text documents as high-level features in order to accurately weight low-level features (terms) based on their specificity and their distributions in the high-level features. The thesis also introduces an adaptive model (called ARFD) to enhance the exibility of using RFD in adaptive environment. ARFD automatically updates the system's knowledge based on a sliding window over new incoming feedback documents. It can efficiently decide which incoming documents can bring in new knowledge into the system. Substantial experiments using the proposed models on Reuters Corpus Volume 1 and TREC topics show that the proposed models significantly outperform both the state-of-the-art term-based methods underpinned by Okapi BM25, Rocchio or Support Vector Machine and other pattern-based methods

    Mining specific and general features in both positive and negative relevance feedback

    User relevance feedback is usually utilized by Web systems to interpret user information needs and retrieve effective results for users. However, how to discover useful knowledge in user relevance feedback and how to wisely use the discovered knowledge are two critical problems. However, understanding what makes an individual document good or bad for feedback can lead to the solution of the previous problem. In TREC 2010, we participated in the Relevance Feedback Track and experimented two models for extracting pseudo-relevance feedback to improve the ranking of retrieved documents. The first one, the main run, was a pattern-based model, whereas the second one, the optional run, was a term-based model. The two models consisted of two stages: one using relevance feedback provided by TREC’10 to expand queries to extract pseudo-relevance feedback; one using pseudo-relevance feedback to find useful patterns and terms according to their relevance and irrelevance judgements to rank documents.     TF-TDA: A Novel Supervised Term Weighting Scheme for Sentiment Analysis

    In text classification tasks, such as sentiment analysis (SA), feature representation and weighting schemes play a crucial role in classification performance. Traditional term weighting schemes depend on the term frequency within the entire document collection; therefore, they are called unsupervised term weighting (UTW) schemes. One of the most popular UTW schemes is term frequency–inverse document frequency (TF-IDF); however, this is not sufficient for SA tasks. Newer weighting schemes have been developed to take advantage of the membership of documents in their categories. These are called supervised term weighting (STW) schemes; however, most of them weigh the extracted features without considering the characteristics of some noisy features and data imbalances. Therefore, in this study, a novel STW approach was proposed, known as term frequency–term discrimination ability (TF-TDA). TF-TDA mainly presents the extracted features with different degrees of discrimination by categorizing them into several groups. Subsequently, each group is weighted based on its contribution. The proposed method was examined over four SA datasets using naive Bayes (NB) and support vector machine (SVM) models. The experimental results proved the superiority of TF-TDA over two baseline term weighting approaches, with improvements ranging from 0.52% to 3.99% in the F1 score. The statistical test results verified the significant improvement obtained by TF-TDA in most cases, where the p-value ranged from 0.0000597 to 0.0455

    An ontology-based mining approach for user search intent discovery

    Discovering proper search intents is a vital process to return desired results. It is constantly a hot research topic regarding information retrieval in recent years. Existing methods are mainly limited by utilizing context-based mining, query expansion, and user profiling techniques, which are still suffering from the issue of ambiguity in search queries. In this paper, we introduce a novel ontology-based approach in terms of a world knowledge base in order to construct personalized ontologies for identifying adequate concept levels for matching user search intents. An iterative mining algorithm is designed for evaluating potential intents level by level until meeting the best result. The propose-to-attempt approach is evaluated in a large volume RCV1 data set, and experimental results indicate a distinct improvement on top precision after compared with baseline models

    Over the years, people have often held the hypothesis that negative feedback should be very useful for largely improving the performance of information filtering systems; however, we have not obtained very effective models to support this hypothesis. This paper, proposes an effective model that use negative relevance feedback based on a pattern mining approach to improve extracted features. This study focuses on two main issues of using negative relevance feedback: the selection of constructive negative examples to reduce the space of negative examples; and the revision of existing features based on the selected negative examples. The former selects some offender documents, where offender documents are negative documents that are most likely to be classified in the positive group. The later groups the extracted features into three groups: the positive specific category, general category and negative specific category to easily update the weight.     A pattern based two-stage text classifier

    In a classification problem typically we face two challenging issues, the diverse characteristic of negative documents and sometimes a lot of negative documents that are closed to positive documents. Therefore, it is hard for a single classifier to clearly classify incoming documents into classes. This paper proposes a novel gradual problem solving to create a two-stage classifier. The first stage identifies reliable negatives (negative documents with weak positive characteristics). It concentrates on minimizing the number of false negative documents (recall-oriented). We use Rocchio, an existing recall based classifier, for this stage. The second stage is a precision-oriented “fine tuning”, concentrates on minimizing the number of false positive documents by applying pattern (a statistical phrase) mining techniques. In this stage a pattern-based scoring is followed by threshold setting (thresholding). Experiment shows that our statistical phrase based two-stage classifier is promising

    A big challenge for classification on text is the noisy of text data. It makes classification quality low. Many classification process can be divided into two sequential steps scoring and threshold setting (thresholding). Therefore to deal with noisy data problem, it is important to describe positive feature effectively scoring and to set a suitable threshold. Most existing text classifiers do not concentrate on these two jobs. In this paper, we propose a novel text classifier with pattern-based scoring that describe positive feature effectively, followed by threshold setting. The thresholding is based on score of training set, make it is simple to implement in other scoring methods. Experiment shows that our pattern-based classifier is promising
